{"id":5109,"date":"2013-09-03T20:02:10","date_gmt":"2013-09-04T00:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=5109"},"modified":"2013-10-02T14:03:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-02T18:03:27","slug":"the-synthetic-aesthetic-3-ultrashop-and-photo-fractal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=5109","title":{"rendered":"The Synthetic Aesthetic 3: Ultrashop and Photo Fractal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the third part of a series on The Synthetic Aesthetic: artwork which is mechanically made as opposed to handmade ( <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=5075\">Part 1<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=5154\">Part 2<\/a> ).\u00a0 Fractal art borders on this synthetic realm because it is one of the most powerful tools for the computational generation of imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Most people commonly think of fractal art as the visualization of math or of at least having a unique character because of its inner workings that draw on the principles of fractal geometry.\u00a0 However, I think fractal programs have for years been used primarily to synthesize artwork of a much more general nature and the connection with fractal math is an exaggeration.\u00a0 If someone can make the same kind of fractal art in Photoshop as one does in Ultra Fractal but without the use of fractal algorithms, then surely the fractal link in much of fractal art these days is truly weak.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean fractal art is no good anymore.\u00a0 All of the fractal artworks I&#8217;m going to review here and compare have been selected by others for their artistic merit.\u00a0 My point is that fractal programs are capable of producing highly distinctive works exemplifying the graphical creativity of fractal geometry, but also of producing things that are much less distinctive and best regarded as just digital art made in a fractal program.<\/p>\n<p>That &#8220;digital art made in a fractal program&#8221; is an example of the synthesizing capabilities of fractal programs.\u00a0 Fractal artists these days chose to pursue the more wide-ranging, synthetic themes than the classical fractal shapes and structures of the past.\u00a0 While doing so, however, they blurred the distinction between Ultra Fractal and Photoshop, which I think you will see in the images below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5137\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractaldimentia.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5137\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5137\" alt=\"fractal dimentia front page art by Mark Townsend\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/fractal-dimentia-front-page.jpeg?resize=500%2C452\" width=\"500\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/fractal-dimentia-front-page.jpeg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/fractal-dimentia-front-page.jpeg?resize=150%2C135&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fractal Dimentia front page art by Mark Townsend (fractal)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have used fractal images that were chosen for the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Exhibits (winners) since I wanted to used fractal art that was representative of a consensus of opinions and therefore exemplary of fractal art today.\u00a0 I could have chosen eccentric examples from unknown artists but they could easily be shrugged off as not representative of anything except themselves.\u00a0 Mark had an image similar to the one above included in one of the exhibits and this one here is from the front page of his online gallery site; clearly a favourite of his.<\/p>\n<p>Below is an image by Randy Kochis.\u00a0 He says this about it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here\u2019s a new abstract piece that was done using a wacom tablet and some filters. Loaded the image as the texture map and set it to 100%. Mostly playing around but I think it turned out pretty good. in PS.\u00a0 This was made in a fractal flame program like maybe Apophysis (I&#8217;m guessing) but even flame fractals don&#8217;t look\u00a0 like they used to.\u00a0 Anyhow, my point (I hope it&#8217;s not too sharp) is that PS also makes such examples of rich jewelled and metallic looking wonders.\u00a0 Clearly fractal art, even in the flames area, is just one way of rendering such artwork.<\/p>\n<p>There are no notes for the image below; that I&#8217;ve been talking about.\u00a0 Sam&#8217;s image is of course a much more sophisticated and elegant work of art than the cellphone case below, but the two objects have an awful lot in common in a basic, visual sense although\u00a0 they are not of the same quality of work, clearly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5176\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/listing\/151253639\/dream-star-swarovski-elements-crystal?ref=related-2\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5176\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5176\" alt=\"dream star swarovski elements crystal Iphone cases cover by Swarovksiiphone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/dream-star-swarovski-elements-crystal-Iphone-cases-cover-by-Swarovksiiphone.jpg?resize=250%2C400\" width=\"250\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/dream-star-swarovski-elements-crystal-Iphone-cases-cover-by-Swarovksiiphone.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/dream-star-swarovski-elements-crystal-Iphone-cases-cover-by-Swarovksiiphone.jpg?resize=93%2C150&amp;ssl=1 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">dream star swarovski elements crystal Iphone cases cover by Swarovksiiphone<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I hope at the very least you&#8217;re seeing a glimmer of my idea that many highly esteemed fractal artworks aren&#8217;t really all that unique when compared with some of the things that can be made without any fractal formulas in Photoshop or even crafting class.\u00a0 But we shouldn&#8217;t really expect such exclusivity when we consider how wide-ranging the rendering capabilities of a program like Ultra Fractal is, and has become, and especially when we take into account its non-fractal features like image importing and various layering abilities.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t expect the same old stuff when you&#8217;re using software like that.<\/p>\n<p>Fractal art by default has come to be defined by whatever you can make in a fractal program.\u00a0 As a result, when fractal programs add rendering and processing features this literally redefines the genre.\u00a0 The result is that fractal artists have greater latitude in what they can depict in their artwork and they&#8217;ve naturally drifted away from the cliche and common, classical style of fractal imagery towards fresh horizons.<\/p>\n<p>But is that still &#8220;fractal enough&#8221; for those who look to fractal art for the depiction of more obvious mathematical themes?\u00a0 I can&#8217;t help but wonder if the ICM, the original sponsors of the BMFAC have no fractal art exhibition listed on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icm2014.org\/\">2014 website<\/a> because they no longer see this fractal art stuff as having any serious mathematical connection?\u00a0 Is it all too much of something else?<\/p>\n<p>Synthetic is what I think that &#8220;something else&#8221;
