{"id":3299,"date":"2011-10-17T16:15:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T20:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=3299"},"modified":"2011-10-17T16:15:40","modified_gmt":"2011-10-17T20:15:40","slug":"benoit-mandelbrot-fractal-art-contest-2011-losers-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=3299","title":{"rendered":"Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest 2011 Losers Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In case you haven&#8217;t seen them, the winning images are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2011\/winners.php\">all here<\/a>.\u00a0 Of the 25 winning images which will make up the entire exhibit shown sometime within the next year, there&#8217;s only really one good one: <em>Aztec Flying City<\/em> by Bernard Bittler.<\/p>\n<p>They messed up his name on the official website.\u00a0 I know because this image of Bernard&#8217;s and subsequently him as well is quite familiar to me; I <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1538\">reviewed it<\/a> here on Orbit Trap over a year ago.\u00a0 He&#8217;s known as &#8220;arias&#8221; on Fractalforums.com where he posted the image in September of 2010.\u00a0 Even still, the image is an excellent example of state of the art 3D fractals and certainly not stale.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t have reviewed any of the other 24 &#8220;winners&#8221; here on Orbit Trap because I don&#8217;t think they&#8217;d be of much interest to anyone.\u00a0 In fact, looking over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2011\/entries.php\">all the entries<\/a> left me feeling a little sorry for the judges.\u00a0 They can only chose from what is submitted and many of my favorite fractal artists, whose work like Bittler&#8217;s I&#8217;ve reviewed here: Johan Anderssen; Jeremie Brunet; Mark Brady; and Hal Tenny; submitted works which weren&#8217;t what I&#8217;d say were their best.<\/p>\n<p>None of <em>them<\/em> are in the &#8220;loser&#8217;s circle&#8221; however.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve identified a number of works that were chosen that I don&#8217;t think belong in any fractal art exhibition and certainly not one that hopes to introduce people to fractal art.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s start with the best of the worst:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3304\" title=\"Capture01\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture01.png?resize=165%2C188\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Janet&#8217;s a legend in the fractal art world but as I<a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=3051\"> posted just recently <\/a>her work expresses a cheap sentimentality and cliche style that has come to characterize what&#8217;s dull and boring about fractal art these days.\u00a0 Even Louis Markoya, a winner in the contest, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=3051#comment-1537\">agreed with my comparison<\/a> of her with Thomas Kinkade, that great &#8220;Painter of Kitsch&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;Revelen&#8221; or any of her other works with such pompous titles belong with the <em>also-rans<\/em> and not with the winners.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3305\" title=\"Capture02\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture02.png?resize=175%2C198\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This one wouldn&#8217;t even make it into the deceased Fractal Universe Calendar.\u00a0 Shiny flowers arranged on a string over a textured background layer?\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost childish.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a mistake with the name, maybe there&#8217;s also a mistake in placing this one as a winner?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3306\" title=\"Capture03\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture03.png?resize=355%2C192\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Conveniently placed together for a screen-shot, here&#8217;s two more &#8220;winners&#8221; who ought to have shared a common destiny buried away in a Deviant Art gallery.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t see much from these thumbnails but take it from me, they look even more trivial when viewed large scale on the contest site.\u00a0 More cliche fractal &#8220;art&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3307\" title=\"Capture04\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture04.png?resize=354%2C194\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yvonne Mous is a previous BMFAC winner.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s much of a compliment anymore.\u00a0 Jessica ought to be ashamed for trying to connect her multi-colored spiral party with Vincent Van Gogh&#8217;s art work.\u00a0 Of course she&#8217;s not guilty of elevating it to the winner&#8217;s circle.\u00a0 All she did was submit it.\u00a0 You are forgiven.\u00a0 Go and sin no more!<\/p>\n<p>One other thing: isn&#8217;t that the &#8220;garish, 70s-style imagery&#8221; that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2011\/rules.php\">the Rules<\/a> say they don&#8217;t want to exhibit?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3308\" title=\"Capture05\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture05.png?resize=167%2C187\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"187\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carbajo is another artist who was chosen in a previous BMFAC.\u00a0 While the other &#8220;losers&#8221; are merely decorative, this one is merely disgusting.\u00a0 Yes, it looks like a tissue slide.\u00a0 But why would we want to look at it?\u00a0 Or exhibit it?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3309\" title=\"Capture06\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture06.png?resize=175%2C191\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"191\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I first saw this one just a few days ago in the recent gallery uploads page on Fractalforums.com.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t click on it there but I did click on it when I saw it on the winners page of the BMFAC 2011 site.\u00a0 Another shiny thing from Ultra Fractal.\u00a0 Even Janet doesn&#8217;t make shiny stuff anymore.\u00a0 The Fractal Universe Calendar would have made this a cover image.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3310\" title=\"Capture07\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture07.png?resize=168%2C186\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bill is a veteran BMFAC winner.\u00a0 He&#8217;s tied with Dave Makin for the lifetime achievement award.\u00a0\u00a0 Dave was a judge so he couldn&#8217;t enter the contest this year.\u00a0 If they want to be fair about things they should make Bill a judge next time so Dave won&#8217;t be penalized for his pit stop as a judge this year.\u00a0 Bill&#8217;s work is sharply rendered and very fractal but so is a broken window.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3311\" title=\"Capture08\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture08.png?resize=163%2C199\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Come on.\u00a0 What were they thinking when they chose this DESKTOP WALLPAPER as one of 25 images for an art exhibition?\u00a0 I will acquiesce and say that maybe Janet Parke&#8217;s artwork is a matter of taste and I just don&#8217;t care for it, but this glassy tree on a mirrored surface by Pasternak looks like a User Contributed Aero desktop theme for Windows Vista.\u00a0 They&#8217;re going to print this out the size of a door and hang it on a wall?\u00a0 It&#8217;s nothing more than a cellphone background.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3312\" title=\"Capture09\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture09.png?resize=171%2C189\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ewa&#8217;s another long time competitor in this World Cup of Fractal Art.\u00a0 I was a little hesitant to label it as one of the losers because I looked so long into that fuzzy sandstorm expecting to see something.\u00a0 Ewa&#8217;s learned a thing or two about &#8220;artistic&#8221; fractals.\u00a0 Make them fuzzy and highly textured and people will see things in them.\u00a0 It would be interesting to hear what the judges saw in this one.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll bet it would be more interesting than the actual artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Let me end off on a positive note.\u00a0 One of our &#8220;biggest fans&#8221; here on Orbit Trap has been hard done by in this year&#8217;s contest.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve listed here 11 images that I think are worthless examples of fractal art out of the total of 25 that they chose as the winners.\u00a0 That&#8217;s almost half the winning entries.\u00a0 Those images have taken places that other entries could have filled.\u00a0 Think about that.<\/p>\n<p>One of the entries that I think beats all 11 of these losers is by Esin Turkakin.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a screen-shot from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2011\/entries.php\">entries page:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3313\" title=\"Capture10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Capture10.png?resize=168%2C188\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Decide for yourselves:\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t Esin&#8217;s Metropolis better than all these losers?\u00a0\u00a0 And yet, it won&#8217;t be exhibited because the judges thought those 11 were better than this one.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t blame the judges for not picking works that weren&#8217;t submitted, but I <em>can<\/em> accuse them of incompetence when they chose bad ones over better ones.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not saying it&#8217;s great, I&#8217;m just saying it&#8217;s <em>better<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest needs a better system of judging.\u00a0 Better art submissions won&#8217;t matter until they fix a system that is both dysfunctional as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=416\">shrouded in secrecy<\/a>.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s herd of losers really begs that point.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and give Bill a chance, too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In case you haven&#8217;t seen them, the winning images are all here.\u00a0 Of the 25 winning images which will make up the entire exhibit shown sometime within the next year, there&#8217;s only really one good one: Aztec Flying City by Bernard Bittler.
