{"id":2622,"date":"2011-03-12T00:43:56","date_gmt":"2011-03-12T05:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=2622"},"modified":"2011-03-12T00:43:56","modified_gmt":"2011-03-12T05:43:56","slug":"velocipede-rides-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=2622","title":{"rendered":"Velocipede Rides Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From time to time I revisit places and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Mr. Velocipede, a long time fractal artist, has reinvented herself and started an new blog with new enthusiasm entitled, <a href=\"http:\/\/mrvelocipede.tumblr.com\/\">&#8220;Oh no, not again.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nothing interests me more than seeing someone do something new and different with fractal art and Velocipede has put her letterpress printing skills to work and printed out some 21st century art with technology that Benjamin Franklin would have been comfortable with.\u00a0 And with style too, as usual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>~Click to view images full-size on original site~<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2623\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrvelocipede.tumblr.com\/post\/3288125136\/a-substantial-amount-of-typesetting-later-and\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2623\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2623 \" title=\"Velocipede1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Velocipede1.jpg?resize=360%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Untitled print by Mr. Velocipede <\/p><\/div>\n<p>A simple and straightforward fractal-ish image but rendered (by hand) in a whole new way.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always liked the look of printed imagery like this.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got a rendering style all it&#8217;s own.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2624\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrvelocipede.tumblr.com\/post\/3476591925\/tight-registration-with-two-shades-of-blue\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2624\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2624\" title=\"Velocipede2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Velocipede2.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Untitled print by Mr. Velocipede<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I like this one even more than the first which has more color in it, but lacks the rich variations in shading and &#8220;texture&#8221; that this julia shape has.\u00a0 Printing is special kind of paint brush and even though it was originally designed for mass production, or at least with smaller hand presses, for higher volume production, the imagery has a creative touch to it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s no wonder that print making hasn&#8217;t lost its appeal: nothing can duplicate it, no pun intended.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2625\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrvelocipede.tumblr.com\/post\/3460627985\/this-is-probably-not-an-ideal-use-of-my-time\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2625\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2625\" title=\"Velocipede3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Velocipede3.jpg?resize=500%2C334\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note the &quot;fractal&quot; printing assemblies in the background. Photo by Mr. Velocipede<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although its much heavier than a computer, I wonder if in fact it might be easier to operate than Ultra Fractal?\u00a0 Of course, the artistry is in the assembly of the type and the skill in putting all the media &#8211;type, ink, paper&#8211; together.\u00a0 And what exactly is she setting up to print?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2627\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrvelocipede.tumblr.com\/post\/3575927895\/i-am-such-an-incredible-dork-these-are-tasteful\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2627\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2627\" title=\"Velocipede5\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Velocipede5.jpg?resize=500%2C334\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Space Invaders letterpress print by Mr. Velocipede<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pretty cool eh?\u00a0 I think Mr. Velocipede is quite enjoying her printing press art form.\u00a0 A nice combination of computer &#8220;pixel art&#8221; and old-fashioned printing methods.\u00a0 And the result is not simply an image file displayed on a monitor but something you can actually touch with your hands.\u00a0 On the other hand you can&#8217;t send them by email.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose with some careful tinkering one might be able to produce something similar with a bubble-jet or color laser printer and card stock, but I imagine you&#8217;d be &#8220;hard-pressed&#8221;
