From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/special\/enron\/5198783.html\" target=\"_blank\">chron.com<\/a> (10-8-07): <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kestan.com\/travel\/dc\/protest_contested_presidency\/Copy%20of%204591%20crowd%20in%20front%20of%20Supreme%20Court%20%28+%29.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Supreme Court<\/a> reacted skeptically today to arguments that banks, lawyers, accountants and suppliers should be held liable for helping publicly held companies deceive investors.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Chief Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/english.people.com.cn\/200509\/06\/images\/0905_D70.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">John Roberts<\/a> and Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.salon.com\/comics\/boll\/2000\/12\/21\/boll\/story.gif\" target=\"_blank\">Antonin Scalia<\/a> suggested that federal law imposes strict limits on shareholders who want to sue companies and firms other than the one in which the investors hold stock.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The two conservative justices subjected a lawyer for corporate investors to tough questioning during arguments as the justices try to set boundaries in stockholder lawsuits for securities fraud.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The outcome of the case will determine the fate of a separate suit by Enron shareholders who are seeking over $30 billion from banks accused of colluding with the energy company to hide its debts.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If the court rules against investors, &#8220;it will mean <a href=\"http:\/\/images.businessweek.com\/ss\/06\/12\/1228_trial_lawyers\/image\/enron.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">the end of the case<\/a>&#8221; for Enron shareholders and the banks that were primarily liable, attorney Patrick Coughlin, representing Enron stockholders, said outside the Supreme Court after the arguments.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">It&#8217;s good to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cursor.org\/images\/bushlay1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">friends<\/a> do favors like appoint Supreme Court <a href=\"http:\/\/www.superchefblog.com\/images\/whitehousedinner_johnroberts.png\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Justices<\/a>.
