{"id":1851,"date":"2010-11-08T15:08:50","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T20:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2010-11-08T15:16:14","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T20:16:14","slug":"hold-on-to-your-mind-lloyd-garricks-little-video-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1851","title":{"rendered":"Hold on to your mind: Lloyd Garrick&#8217;s little video project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Known as JackOfTraDeZ or FractAlkemist and probably a few others, Lloyd Garrick, a name he rarely goes by, has made a sizable collection of fractal videos using Fractint and some very interesting musical soundtracks.\u00a0 In fact, the music almost adds an extra dimension to the fractal visuals and the combination of the two transforms them in the same way adding a third dimension makes everything come alive in 3D imagery.<\/p>\n<p>As is so often the case with me these days, my discovery began with a humble link from a thread about something unrelated at Fractalforums.com:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/general-discussion-b77\/burning-ship-fractal\/msg7093\/#msg7093\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1852\" title=\"ship-thread\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ship-thread.png?resize=545%2C192\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ship-thread.png?w=769&amp;ssl=1 769w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ship-thread.png?resize=600%2C211&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a>Famous videos?\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know there was such a thing in Fractaland.\u00a0 After clicking on the famous videos link and visting the <a href=\"http:\/\/fractal-animation.net\/\">Ultimate Fractal Video Project<\/a> site where his many videos are available for download, I went to his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/FractAlkemist\">YouTube channel<\/a>.\u00a0 And all this before I&#8217;d even finished my morning coffee.<\/p>\n<p>The title image for the BuddaBrot video caught my interest right away&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/pDhDUoWLn6I?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I generally &#8220;listen&#8221; to videos with the sound turned off.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because the musical accompaniment usually doesn&#8217;t accompany the video.\u00a0 So I &#8220;listened&#8221; to this one muted as well.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until I&#8217;d viewed a few more that I began to wonder what sort of soundtrack, if any, there was.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, the music combines with the imagery to take the video to a whole new level of creativity and alive-ness.\u00a0 In <em>BuddaBrot<\/em> the gritty golden noise actually seems to be moving with the beat of the music.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like it&#8217;s dancing.<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/MIOCLXjQ1uw?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Lloyd says this about Mission to Mars on the video&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MIOCLXjQ1uw\">YouTube page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Use your imagination! You&#8217;re a rich space tourist on a mission to Mars.  You approach the red planet from deep space, descend into orbit, then  make planetfall into one of the large canyons known to exist there. You  rocket above and over the surface looking for a smooth place to land  among the sand dunes and mountains. &#8230; And you wish you had hired a  better pilot &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lloyd&#8217;s got a sense of humor!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever seen comedy in a fractal video before.\u00a0 Also; did you notice that the video is nothing more than a &#8220;deep-deep&#8221; zoom?\u00a0 Lloyd&#8217;s got a way a making everything new.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/C5BuLT0TdFc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Note how the acceleration of the car&#8217;s engine is matched by the changing imagery in the video.\u00a0 This is really a very well planned bit of animation.<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2jQlPFU-KOU?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Fractint stuff looks pretty retro doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 And the soundtrack is <em>&#8211;what?<\/em> It sounds more like a machine than a piece of music.\u00a0 But together, they create something I find very impressive.\u00a0 This is the secret of art: <em>it&#8217;s not what you use, it&#8217;s how you use it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ultrafractal makes some very smooth and advanced fractal imagery, but it&#8217;s no different than Fractint when it comes to making <em>art<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd goes even further and makes this comment on <em>Cathedral of Chaos<\/em> (not included here): <em>&#8220;Tweaked Mandelbrot LAKE animation. You can do things with FRACTINT like no other freakin program out there!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Mx8qwBpOK8w?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I chose Dancing Dragon not because it&#8217;s one of Lloyd&#8217;s best videos but because it&#8217;s probably the best example of his skill in combining fractals with sound.\u00a0 The fractal imagery alone is really nothing too exciting.\u00a0 As cool as this julia of the mandelbrot set might have looked the very first time we discovered it, it&#8217;s a pretty cliche theme in any fractal art venue now.<\/p>\n<p>And yet!\u00a0 And yet, the soundtrack floods that old worn-out image with a golden grandeur and makes us feel we&#8217;re watching the awakening of\u00a0 some great golden dragon.\u00a0 We can all learn a thing or two from Lloyd here.\u00a0 Or should I say, <em>Master <\/em>Lloyd?<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/gSzjmkiAWwI?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>StarGate uses a soundtrack from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_%28film%29\"><em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em><\/a>, Stanley Kubrick&#8217;s famous, <em>and very freaky<\/em>, science fiction movie.\u00a0 Kubrick really raised the bar for science fiction movies, maybe even a bit too high since no one&#8217;s been able to even touch it since then.<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd is right when he says, &#8220;Too bad fractal animation wasn&#8217;t available when 2001 Space Odyssey was  made in 1968 but it&#8217;s available now so how come noone&#8217;s using it?&#8221;\u00a0 Lloyd&#8217;s simple fractal imagery fits in quite well with what I think Kubrick was trying to do in the Star Gate scene from his movie (which is something everyone is still trying to figure out).\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t have to tell you; the power of YouTube allows me to &#8220;quote&#8221; from <em>2001: A Space Odyssey. <\/em>You don&#8217;t have to watch the whole 10 minutes; some people find Stanley Kubrick boring.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ou6JNQwPWE0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Back to Lloyd, the Stanley Kubrick of fractal art.<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/AXZ7vzE4Ow0?version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><em>Profoundly minimalistic;<\/em> that&#8217;s what makes this one so good.\u00a0 The silvery, bubbly fractal image is quite elegant and has strong design characteristics.\u00a0 The music is really nothing more than a background &#8220;theme&#8221;
