Apparently, I have no grand vision to impart to start the New Year.<\/p>\n<p>~\/~<\/p>\n<p>Orbit Trap has published several recent posts exploring the nature of fractal art, and Tim <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=541\" target=\"_blank\">explicated an image<\/a> by Guido Cavalcante and analyzed its artistic expression.\u00a0 In response, several commenters wondered why we haven&#8217;t provided more examples of work we consider to be fractal art rather than fractal craft.<\/p>\n<p>But a quick trip through OT&#8217;s archives will show many positive reviews.\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s safe to assume that if we complimented someone&#8217;s work, then we probably felt that work was an example of fractal art we admired.\u00a0 Here is a short list of fractal artists whose work we have praised in the years we&#8217;ve been blogging:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=341\" target=\"_blank\">Morgen Bell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=317\" target=\"_blank\">Tamrof Boynton<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=541\" target=\"_blank\">Guido Cavalcante<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=359\" target=\"_blank\">Jock Cooper<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=344\" target=\"_blank\">Paul DeCelle<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=421\" target=\"_blank\">Manas Dichow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=354\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Ferguson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=546\" target=\"_blank\">Terry W. Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=336\" target=\"_blank\">Fernanda Steele<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=326\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Townsend<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=317\" target=\"_blank\">Harmen Wiersma<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=420\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Wills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As I say, this is an incomplete list, and OT&#8217;s archives contain more examples.\u00a0 So, I wish our adversaries, like <a href=\"http:\/\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/crazydentist.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Childress<\/a>, who persists on whining that we are whiners who mostly wallow in negativity, would finish their reading before beginning their writing.<\/p>\n<p>~\/~<\/p>\n<p>Last year, I said my favorite fractal art image of 2008 was one of <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=314\" target=\"_blank\">Paul DeCelle<\/a>&#8216;s UF renditions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askart.com\/AskART\/artists\/search\/Search_Repeat.aspx?searchtype=IMAGES&amp;artist=11120639\" target=\"_blank\">Lars-Gunnar Nordstr\u00f6m<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I think my favorite image of 2009 was this one:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/TheGoogleSearchEngine_GarthThornton.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/TheGoogleSearchEngine_sm.jpg?w=545\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The Google Search Engine by Garth Thornton\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Google Search Engine<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xenodream.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garth Thornton<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Orbit Trap also named Thornton our <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=402\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Man of the Year&#8221;<\/a> for the moral courage he showed over his resignation as a judge from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2009\/\" target=\"_blank\">2009 Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest<\/a>.\u00a0 Unlike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultrafractal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractaldimentia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">other<\/a> fractal software authors, Thornton <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/competitions-and-contests\/benoit-mandelbrot-fractal-art-contest-2009\/15\/\" target=\"_blank\">understood<\/a> serving as a judge would create an inherent conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p>~\/~<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultrafractal.com\/mailinglist.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ultra Fractal Mailing List<\/a> was offline for over two weeks at the end of 2009. Naturally, given his customary penchant for secrecy, there was no explanation for the outage from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.damienmjones.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">list manager<\/a>.
