But will you settle for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedarkpsyde.com\/images\/Meditation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">meditation<\/a> instead?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If we assume that fractal art is indeed a legitimate fine art form &#8212; and I do &#8212; then every facet of fine art must be open to fractal art. I&#8217;ve argued in a previous <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/fractal-politics.html\" target=\"_blank\">OT post<\/a> that fractal art can be used for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purgatorius.org\/Political%20Cartoons%20Images\/Bush-CasualtiesW.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">political expression<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/fractalmix.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guido Cavalcante<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/fractals-that-no-one-wants-to-see.html\" target=\"_blank\">another early OT post<\/a>, advocated using fractals for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weburbanist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/stop-the-war.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">social commentary<\/a> and for &#8220;making the hidden visible.&#8221; And Tim <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/postcards-from-future.html\" target=\"_blank\">has shown<\/a>, in a meta sense, that digital art can even be utilized to <a href=\"http:\/\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/holdamirror.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">hold a mirror<\/a> up to the fractal community. <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">But can fractal art max out with perfect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metabunker.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/little_nemo_1908.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">subversiveness<\/a>? Can fractals be used for <a href=\"http:\/\/pranks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/121707parkbench-425.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">guerrilla art<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/LeninwithMittens.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Lenin with Mittens\" \/>  <\/p>\n<div>  <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Lenin with Mittens <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/majorbonnet\/305317350\/in\/pool-754816@N22\" target=\"_blank\">majorbonnet<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Some artistic genres that were once perceived as more suited for the craft section of the <a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2391\/2338348810_5f598b20d9.jpg?v=0\" target=\"_blank\">remaindered bin<\/a> have come out swinging. The knitting community, in particular, has long showed a penchant for creating and displaying art using guerrilla tactics. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yarnivore.com\/runblog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rose White<\/a>, who lectures on the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1381\/1129663332_edbd66e2c4_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">guerilla knitting<\/a>, summarizes <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ccc.de\/congress\/2007\/Fahrplan\/events\/2358.en.html\" target=\"_blank\">her talk<\/a> as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Contemporary knitters feel very clever for coming up with edgy language to describe their knitting, but the truth is that for decades there have been knitters and other textile artists who are at least as punk rock as today&#8217;s needle-wielders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/KnitTank_Joergensen.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Knit Tank by Mariann Joergensen\" \/>  <\/p>\n<div>  <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Knit Tank<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.makezine.com\/archive\/2006\/04\/knit_tank.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marianne Joergensen<\/a> (and 1000 volunteers) <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Any artistic movement faces certain struggles and some internal criticism when being born. Apparently, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.we-make-money-not-art.com\/archives\/2007\/12\/24c3-the-histor.php\" target=\"_blank\">a post on 24c3<\/a> entitled &#8220;The History of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.we-make-money-not-art.com\/yyy\/0aasmallintestin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Guerrilla Knitting<\/a>,&#8221; the crucial turning point for knitters came at the close of the 1960s:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Another schism happened at the end of the &#8217;60s and beginning &#8217;70s. Then enters our heroine: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Zimmerman\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Zimmermann<\/a>. She was commissioned to make a sweater. She gave it to the company but they re-wrote the patterns using a proprietary system. Disgusted by the process, she started her own company and she&#8217;d invite knitters to be the boss of their knitting, distinguishing the &#8220;blind followers&#8221; from the &#8220;thinking knitters.&#8221; The point was to put the control of what was going on back into the hands of the knitter. It&#8217;s like Linux versus Windows.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Sound familiar? Fractal art is waiting for a similar transformational break. The prevailing monarchy &#8212; with its <em>de rigueur<\/em> software (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultrafractal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">UF<\/a>) and its corrupt, self-serving contests (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalartcontests.com\/2007\/\" target=\"_blank\">BMFAC<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforum.com\/gallery\/index.php?spgmGal=Fractal_Universe_Calendar_2010\" target=\"_blank\">FUC<\/a>) &#8212; constitute our comparable &#8220;proprietary system.&#8221; These Fractal CEOs create competitions designed to first and foremost <a href=\"http:\/\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/BMFAC2007.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">highlight their own art<\/a>, then claim in subsequent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icm2006.org\/culturalactivities\/fractalart\/\" target=\"_blank\">publicity materials<\/a> to be showcasing &#8220;high quality works by the most important fractal artists in the world.&#8221; Even OT disliker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brendanmcphillips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/09\/pinocchio.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Childress<\/a> catapulted such propaganda again last week on his blog (no link):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"> UF is the program of choice for many of those who are the most respected fractal artists today.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">And Childress proves this claim by &#8230; simply making the claim &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/wedonottorture-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">as if saying so makes any utterance true<\/a>, just like judging a fractal contest that includes your own work makes you respectable and &#8220;important.&#8221; Meanwhile, Childress gets to hang out with the self-selected Kewl Kidz in the Fractal McMansion. Why rock the boat when you&#8217;re sitting on a velvet cushion in it?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">So, it looks like we are at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photochart.com\/data\/media\/13\/crossroads.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">crossroads<\/a>. And here&#8217;s the question of the hour. Are you a &#8220;blind follower&#8221;? Or are you a &#8220;thinking&#8221; fractal artist?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/CosiesforAnchors1.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Cosies for Anchors 1\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/CosiesforAnchors2.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Cosies for Anchors\" \/>  <\/p>\n<div>  <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Cosies for Anchors<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/maskerade.blogsome.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maskerade<\/a><\/div>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"left\">In many ways, the textile and fiber arts have a head start, but there are encouraging signs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roserushbrooke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rose Rushbrooke<\/a> continues to break new ground with her fractal quilts. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ylem.org\/artists\/ekent\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eleanor Kent<\/a> uses knitting needles and photocopiers for her fractal-laced textile creations. Other fiber artists, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiberarts.com\/article_archive\/reviews\/solo\/lesleykice.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Lesley Kice<\/a>, create installations exhibiting fractal properties like self-similarity. And if you prefer wearing your art, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evilmadscientist.com\/article.php\/fimofractals\" target=\"_blank\">Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories<\/a> will gladly show you how to make your own fractal earrings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i3.photobucket.com\/albums\/y95\/armyyouhave\/cruelanimal\/KnittingMachine_DaveCole.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Knitting Machine by Dave Cole\" \/><\/p>\n<div>  <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Knitting Machine<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theknittingmachine.com\/Dave_Cole\/theknittingmachine.com.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Cole<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Can fractal artists push the guerrilla envelope? Do we have our own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weburbanist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/banksy-stencil-guerilla-street-art.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Banksy<\/a>? And what forms will these fractal guerrilla excursions take? Hacking websites to insert fractal art pop-ups? Quats <a href=\"http:\/\/planetross.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/06\/bravia-play-doh-rabbits1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">made with Play-Doh<\/a> left conspicuously in daycare centers? Wearing  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk\/mackay\/cauliflower.html\" target=\"_blank\">cauliflower<\/a> buds in our suit lapels instead of  carnations? <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Who in our community will step up? Or is someone already mining this territory? And, please, you won&#8217;t convince me the many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafepress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CafePress<\/a> commercialistic offerings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafepress.com\/saracom37.87552034\" target=\"_blank\">fractal thongs<\/a> can be called erotic sorties into the battleground of guerrilla foreplay.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Back with another more review-type post soon.
