formula or whatever it is, is the most exciting thing to happen this year.\u00a0 Samuel Monnier on his Algorithmic Worlds Blog<a href=\"http:\/\/www.algorithmic-worlds.net\/blog\/blog.php?Post=20110227\"> explains it<\/a> better than I can.\u00a0 I just look at &#8220;Duck&#8221; pictures and see that Ducks is a creative and surprisingly unpredictable thing full of variation.\u00a0 Timemit adds something more and has captured an almost Art Nouveau kind of geometry\/organic fusion thing.\u00a0 &#8230;silkscreen, batik, it&#8217;s just very captivating and really surprised me.\u00a0 Maybe Deviant Art is more than just a playground for socially disturbed people?\u00a0 I&#8217;m beginning to think so.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3430\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/timemit.deviantart.com\/gallery\/31746384#\/d4eqcoi\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3430\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3430\" title=\"what_the_war_lost_by_timemit-d4eqcoi\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/what_the_war_lost_by_timemit-d4eqcoi.jpg?resize=375%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/what_the_war_lost_by_timemit-d4eqcoi.jpg?w=375 375w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/what_the_war_lost_by_timemit-d4eqcoi.jpg?resize=300%2C400 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What the War Lost by Timemit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Top left area is my favorite in this one, but the whole thing is a treasure trove of fractal gems.\u00a0 You see?\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to know anything about &#8220;Ducks&#8221; to spot it instantly.\u00a0 There&#8217;s the theory of Ducks and the practice of Ducks.\u00a0 Do you see any of the &#8220;self-similarity&#8221; or boring repetition of the old time fractals here?\u00a0 Ducks is usually a wonderland of shape and color but this one by Timemit is an exceptionally good example.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3431\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/misterxz.deviantart.com\/gallery\/?offset=24#\/d11aq5g\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3431\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3431\" title=\"Fractal_Years_by_misterxz\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Fractal_Years_by_misterxz.jpg?resize=333%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Fractal_Years_by_misterxz.jpg?w=333 333w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Fractal_Years_by_misterxz.jpg?resize=266%2C400 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fractal_Years_by_misterxz (Deviant Art)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m on the topic of Ducks, here&#8217;s one by the (allegedly) Ducks Master, Misterxz.\u00a0 This one is a fantastic image on it&#8217;s own right but especially as an example of the Duck-ian method.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t really look &#8220;fractal&#8221; at all, except, I guess for the tree things at the top and the Koch snowflake things near the bottom&#8230;\u00a0 I guess what makes it new and exciting is that there&#8217;s so much variety in what is a formula generated image.\u00a0 Ducks is a whole new world and Misterxz&#8217;s image here makes that pretty obvious.\u00a0 Ducks adds something categorically new to fractal graphics even if it&#8217;s not a huge break-though in fractal theory.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3432\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/110633829144783649071\/UltraMeta02#5558648887695486114\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3432\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3432\" title=\"Ultrameta 731\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ultrameta-731.jpg?resize=512%2C512\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ultrameta-731.jpg?w=512 512w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ultrameta-731.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ultrameta-731.jpg?resize=400%2C400 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ultrameta 731 by Dan Wills (Picasa)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dan&#8217;s in a rendering category all his own.\u00a0 He manages to find really weird stuff and capture it in an eye-catching way.\u00a0 This one is actually about a year old (Dec. 2010) so I must have missed it or something last time I checked out his Picasa Web Album Ultrameta gallery.\u00a0 Dan&#8217;s galleries are a voyage into the fractal unknown.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t view stuff like this and not want to grab your own &#8220;ship&#8221; (Postwork in PSE&#8230;)&#8221;. \u00a0 (Inkblot Kaos?)\u00a0 Some sort of edge-detection filter and maybe a texturing thing too to give the leathery look.\u00a0 An old &#8220;trick&#8221; perhaps and not nearly as eye catching as the latest 3D rendering techniques but Jimmie has accentuated the simple shapes and patterning in this humble 2D fractal and made them interesting and resembling paper cut collages.\u00a0 The sharply defined mandelbrot man in the center is elegant in a simple way.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of &#8220;papercuts&#8221;, here&#8217;s one recently unearthed from a storage room at the University of Michigan.\u00a0 Created originally by a small art academy in southern China back in the early days of the Cultural Revolution and acquired by a UofM professor via a source in Hong Kong back in the early 70s and subsequently forgotten until just recently when someone cleaned the storage room:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3447\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/c\/ccs1ic\/x-ccs0013\/CCS0013?back=back1320846604;bbdbid=649054132;lasttype=bbaglist;lastview=bbthumbnail;resnum=12;size=100;subview=detail;view=bbentry;xc=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3447\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3447\" title=\"ccs0013JP2-re3-final\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ccs0013JP2-re3-final.jpg?resize=500%2C385\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ccs0013JP2-re3-final.jpg?w=500 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ccs0013JP2-re3-final.jpg?resize=400%2C308 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Translation: &quot;Chairman Mao is the Reddest Sun in Our Hearts&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>China&#8217;s a far-out kind of place.\u00a0 These pictures are actually made of white cut-out paper pieces mounted on a red (very, very red) background.\u00a0 Check out the<a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/cgi\/i\/image\/image-idx?type=bbaglist;view=bbthumbnail;bbdbid=649054132\"> whole collection of 15<\/a> if you find these sorts of things as bizarre and sci-fi-ish as I do.\u00a0 The authors are unknown but they were certainly very skilled at this rather ancient art of chinese papercut artwork.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ns.umich.edu\/new\/multimedia\/9-videos\/20031-rare-chinese-papercuts-liberated-from-u-m-storage-room-now-on-display\">News release of Nov. 1, 2011 for the collection.<\/a>\u00a0 History is a kind of science fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not end this posting with images of communist propaganda or with harsh, political speeches exhorting the fractal proletariat to <a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/c\/ccs1ic\/x-ccs0007\/CCS0007?back=back1320854071;bbdbid=1053668955;lasttype=bbaglist;lastview=bbthumbnail;resnum=7;size=100;subview=detail;view=bbentry;xc=1\">Eliminate the Four Olds<\/a> (The List; but not sentimental like most &#8220;dramatic&#8221; fractal images are.\u00a0 It&#8217;s ironic that Mehrdadart who generally makes such rich, ornamental images could have produced something so different and yet equally engaging.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the connection with the little white dot on the right hand edge that &#8220;leverages&#8221; the rest of the image.\u00a0 Ultimately, fractal art is all about art, not fractals.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more.\u00a0 There always is.\u00a0 Especially now that I&#8217;ve found a more effective way to browse the labyrinthine passages of Deviant Art.\u00a0 My great discovery?\u00a0 I check out people&#8217;s &#8220;favorites&#8221; section.\u00a0 Oddly enough while fractal artists will endlessly promote heaps of their own garbage they are much more discerning when promoting the works of others.\u00a0 All the DA artists I&#8217;ve featured here were found because someone else (who probably wasn&#8217;t featured here) had &#8220;faved&#8221;
