The principal themes of <a href=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/23\/31587391_877af5b0c5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">sex and death<\/a> were considered scandalous, and the book became a by-word for unwholesomeness among mainstream <a href=\"http:\/\/i80.photobucket.com\/albums\/j182\/swiftian\/052707\/ann_coulter_origin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">critics of the day<\/a>. Baudelaire, his publisher, and the printer were successfully prosecuted for creating <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">an offense against public morals<\/a>. In the poem &#8220;Au lecteur&#8221; (&#8220;To the Reader&#8221;) that prefaces <i>Les fleurs du mal<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/poetrydispatch.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/10\/baudelaire2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Baudelaire<\/a> accuses his readers of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surrealismnow.com\/images\/600_1_1a_KRIS_KUKSI_Idols_of_Hypocrisy_by_kuksi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">hypocrisy<\/a> and of being as guilty of sins and lies as the poet.<br \/>&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/languageisavirus.com\/bios\/Baudelaire.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Language is a Virus<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Flowers of Evil<\/em> is perhaps the most influential book of poems of the nineteenth century. The title, like the poems themselves, establishes a dialectic between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galeriaaniela.com.au\/Arthur%20BOYD%20Images\/A%20Boyd%20oil%2020x30cm207065.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">beauty and sin<\/a>. A flower usually evokes the beauty of innocence &#8212; of nature in fragile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/ffximage\/2006\/11\/01\/stevebartlett_narrowweb__300x463,0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">expectant bloom<\/a>. But, the poet posits, is there not beauty as well in the <a href=\"http:\/\/img.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2008\/04_01\/tornadoDM3030b_800x533.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">excesses of nature<\/a>, in the ugly aspects of being, in an amoral life? Is not even &#8212; or especially &#8212; the freshest flower always on the <a href=\"http:\/\/emotoons.net\/Images\/original.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">verge of decay<\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ignatius.edu\/faculty\/turner\/images\/baudelaire2.JPG\" target=\"_blank\">Baudelaire<\/a> adored lust, <a href=\"http:\/\/arts.guardian.co.uk\/pictures\/image\/0,8543,-10405300565,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">ennui<\/a>, and avarice. He opens his collection of poems with an address &#8220;To the Reader,&#8221; which announces both his own and his addressee&#8217;s propensity for <a href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_myX5Q4qMDhY\/R8smGWUhdMI\/AAAAAAAAAUw\/jce8jrZCvas\/s1600-h\/easter+redux+1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">falseness<\/a>: &#8220;You &#8212; hypocrite reader &#8212; my twin &#8212; my brother.&#8221; Within us all lie the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk\/images\/thumbnail1.php\/9cfcc4a3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">flowers of evil<\/a>.<br \/> &#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artandculture.com\/cgi-bin\/WebObjects\/ACLive.woa\/wa\/artist?id=1406\" target=\"_blank\">ArtandCulture<br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">~\/~<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">From the &#8220;Flowers of Evil&#8221; series.
