{"id":2977,"date":"2011-09-15T00:16:01","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T04:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=2977"},"modified":"2011-09-15T00:19:10","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T04:19:10","slug":"reallybigname-reallygreatstuff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=2977","title":{"rendered":"Reallybigname = Reallygreatstuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only place\u00a0 I ever go on a regular basis to see fractal art is Fractalforums.com.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t pay much attention to the names only the artwork.\u00a0 So when a name like<em> reallybigname<\/em> becomes familiar to me it can only be because he&#8217;s been consistently uploading interesting work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>~Click on images to view full size on original site~<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2978\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=8450\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2978\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2978\" title=\"2941_09_09_11_11_33_11\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2941_09_09_11_11_33_11.jpeg?resize=400%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayan Trickster #4 by reallybigname<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was the colors that caught my eye, but on viewing the larger image I was genuinely shocked to see the incredible detail and stunning 3D depth to the image.\u00a0 This was apparently made with Jesse Dierks&#8217; Mandelbulb 3D but I&#8217;ve never seen anything like it from that program or any other.<\/p>\n<p>As the title suggests, this is one of a series of images uploaded to Fractalforums.com and here&#8217;s an even more recent one:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2979\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=8506\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2979\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2979\" title=\"Mayan Trickster #6 - Shambhalaya by reallybigname\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Mayan-Trickster-6-Shambhalaya-by-reallybigname.jpeg?resize=400%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayan Trickster #6 - Shambhalaya by reallybigname<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Everything is just great; the color, the lighting.\u00a0 And like the first one the incredible detail is &#8230;incredible!\u00a0 Really crisp, high-quality rendering too.\u00a0 This is a new benchmark for Jesse&#8217;s program and the 3D fractal category probably too.<\/p>\n<p>Reallybigname must just have a flair for fractal &#8220;piloting&#8221; I reviewed in a post a year ago.\u00a0 This is the geometric engines of fractal art working in high gear; who could ever make artwork like this by hand?\u00a0 And could they do it better?\u00a0 The best any hand made artist could do to approach this sort of thing would be to<em> copy<\/em> something like this.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2986\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=7963\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2986\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2986\" title=\"Wooden Ruins by reallybigname\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Wooden-Ruins-by-reallybigname.jpeg?resize=400%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wooden Ruins by reallybigname<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first genuine all wood 3D fractal image.\u00a0 Wooden fractals?\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t it look like wood to you?<\/p>\n<p>This reallybigname guy has too much talent.\u00a0 Who is he?<\/p>\n<p>I did some link clicking and quickly discovered his real name is Forest Walz, hailing from San Jose, California (or Costa Rica?).\u00a0 He has a website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reallybigname.com\/index.htm\">REALLYBIGNAME.COM<\/a> where it tells me that he&#8217;s&#8230; well, a screenshot is easier:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2981\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reallybigname.com\/about_me.htm\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2981\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2981\" title=\"reallybigname about\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/reallybigname-about.png?resize=398%2C265\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Now you know who reallybigname is<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I knew this guy was talented.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll bet he has a YouTube channel.\u00a0 Could it be called &#8220;reallybigname&#8221;?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s try that and see:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nfg1I4FidhA\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>He wrote the music, too.\u00a0 Notice the nice, clean rendering and the&#8230; oh no&#8230;the temptation to embed YouTube videos has me in it&#8217;s power&#8230; can&#8217;t&#8230; stop&#8230; it&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gmsN3Wp7BoY\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Slideshows seem a little tame compared to 3D flythoughs, but this serves as a nice portfolio of reallybigname&#8217;s work and suggests, I believe, that discovery is a big part of making interesting fractal work.\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s a wide range of imagery here but his recent Mayan Trickster series are the best.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I think the Mayan Trickster images are a good example of the graphical designs strengths of fractals that I talked about in my <a href=\"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=2836\">Rebooting Fractal Art<\/a> series of blog posts.\u00a0 Reallybigname&#8217;s Mayan images may not be Picassos or Rembrants, but they are very good at what they do.\u00a0 And what they do is excel at complex graphical design; something Picasso or Rembrant in fact could not do as well as reallybigname here has done.<\/p>\n<p>We need to start thinking of fractal art as the domain of geometric design and rich graphical wonders like these.\u00a0 Baseball players don&#8217;t make good swimmers, but when they stick to playing baseball they really shine.<\/p>\n<p>Reallybigname has just hit a homer with his Mayan series.\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing speculative or subjective about that; anyone can see how fractal algorithms excel at this kind of artwork.\u00a0 Fractal art is in a class of its own and this is some of the best of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The only place  I ever go on a regular basis to see fractal art is Fractalforums.com.
