{"id":1757,"date":"2010-10-21T23:05:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-22T03:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1757"},"modified":"2011-01-13T16:13:32","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T21:13:32","slug":"prince-johan-and-a-few-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1757","title":{"rendered":"Prince Johan &#8230;and a few others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have a few rules of thumb I like to keep to when it comes to reviewing fractal art.\u00a0 One of them, if it were boiled down and expressed as a revolutionary slogan painted on a flag, is &#8220;Art, not Artists&#8221;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a hard rule to follow in the fractal art world where the work of most artists is eclectic by nature and varies quite widely.\u00a0 Expressed another way: There are no good artists, only good art.<\/p>\n<p>I go looking for good artwork and the name of the artist is just part of the frame.\u00a0 Lately the art trail keeps leading back to Johan Ason&#8217;s Mandelwerk Castle, his Deviant Art gallery.\u00a0 I think there is such a thing as a talent for working with fractal software and other algorithmic machines to make artwork.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like a talent for taking photographs.\u00a0 It&#8217;s different than a talent for painting or sketching but, like all visual art, the final result is something you look at.\u00a0 The process is different and as such it favors a different skill set and a different talent that directs it.\u00a0 So maybe there is a such a thing as a good fractal artist.<\/p>\n<p>Johan (aka Kraftwerk on Fractalforums.com) seems to have that talent for fractal software.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s a few others.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take a look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>~ Click any of the following images in this posting to view full-size on the original site ~<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1759\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mandelwerk.deviantart.com\/art\/Hommage-to-Benoit-Mandelbrot-183072508\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1759\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1759\" title=\"hommage_to_benoit_mandelbrot_by_mandelwerk-d30zvng\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/hommage_to_benoit_mandelbrot_by_mandelwerk-d30zvng.jpg?resize=545%2C273\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hommage to Benoit Mandelbrot, by Johan Ason (Mandelwerk)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most of the time, natural imagery like sunsets and clouds clash with computer generated fractal imagery.\u00a0 For that reason alone, Johan deserves an special award for this one: the natural sky and the fractal landscape fit together perfectly.\u00a0 And as a salute to the recent passing of Dr. Mandelbrot it&#8217;s even more appropriate:\u00a0 I can&#8217;t think of a more realistic, while at the same time fantastic, rendering of what an alien planet might look like; a world created by fractal geometry.<\/p>\n<p>Someone on Fractalforums.com commented on the excellent composition of the image also.\u00a0 The eye is naturally and effortlessly guided through the image first from the structure in the left foreground, across that barren stretch in the middle to the distant hill and finally to that fading sunset.\u00a0 Painters can make these sorts of compositions happen deliberately, but photographers and fractal artists have to hunt them down and capture them in the wild.\u00a0 (With a little help sometimes from a graphics program.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1762\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mandelwerk.deviantart.com\/#\/d2zczyc \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1762\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1762\" title=\"13th_secret_of_cathedral_woods_by_mandelwerk\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/13th_secret_of_cathedral_woods_by_mandelwerk.jpg?resize=545%2C259\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">13th Secret of Cathedral Woods by Johan Ason (Mandelwerk)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You really need to click on this one to see the great detail in the full-size image.\u00a0 The &#8220;tree trunks&#8221; themselves have some strange secrets to tell and the glowing glass canopy of &#8220;leaves&#8221; is even more spectacular in the larger version.\u00a0 Cathedral and Woods makes for a good title and I like the mysterious sound of the <em>13th Secret<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Do you see the strange face lurking beside the tree trunk in the right corner?\u00a0 That&#8217;s not an evil troll waiting to skin you alive in a full moon ritual, that&#8217;s the artist.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen artists try to get creative with their signature\/watermarks but none have looked as good as this.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1763\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1763\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1763\" title=\"johan watermark\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/johan-watermark.png?resize=520%2C479\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"479\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finest signature\/watermark I&#39;ve ever seen by... Johan Andersson!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Well, drown my kittens!\u00a0 It&#8217;s <em>Andersson<\/em>, not Ason.\u00a0 I noticed that his first name didn&#8217;t seem to be spelled right on his Deviant Art page, so maybe I should have been more careful.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t believe everything you read on the internet or just guess at stuff you&#8217;re not sure about.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s his picture (I&#8217;m guessing); the squiggle on his shoulder is his actual autograph; there&#8217;s an email address and a nifty, <em>euro<\/em>-company name: <em>KONSTPRODUKT<\/em>.\u00a0 All that in a single color image; that&#8217;s better identification than a passport.\u00a0 Very classy.\u00a0 Apparently konstprodukt is Swedish for <em>artifact<\/em>.\u00a0 I think I&#8217;m getting close to unraveling the next secret of the Cathedral Woods.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, Johan has constructed a very creative as well as effective signature for his work.\u00a0 The email address is a great idea.\u00a0 Assuming that shadowy figure hasn&#8217;t scared you off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1764\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3532\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1764\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1764\" title=\"Seventh Secret of the Forest by Kraftwerk\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Seventh-Secret-of-the-Forest-by-Kraftwerk.jpeg?resize=545%2C545\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Seventh-Secret-of-the-Forest-by-Kraftwerk.jpeg?w=600 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Seventh-Secret-of-the-Forest-by-Kraftwerk.jpeg?resize=150%2C150 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seventh Secret of the Forest by Johan Andersson (Mandelwerk)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Johan writes: &#8220;Inspired by Jesses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3447\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3447<\/a> and Rrrolas images of negative scaled boxes I went ahead and found a surreal forest&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I would never have thought such an image could come from the mandelbox, but then, it hasn&#8217;t even been around for a whole year yet, so maybe there&#8217;s lots more to be done with it.\u00a0 A very different style of image from the usual 3D fractal graphics.\u00a0 It would make a great <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Yessongs_Pathways.jpg\">Yes album cover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1768\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3671\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1768\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1768\" title=\"Dark Secret of the Moon by Kraftwerk\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Dark-Secret-of-the-Moon-by-Kraftwerk.jpeg?resize=545%2C273\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dark Secret of the Moon by Johan Andersson (Kraftwerk\/Mandelwerk)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Apart from the awesome panorama in the top left of the image and the shining cliff face that forms part of it, what I find equally interesting is what&#8217;s going on in the right hand side.\u00a0 The incredibly lifelike and very graphic imagery on the left slowly changes to very plain, geometric and much more abstract imagery on the right.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost like a diagram or chart showing a range of something.\u00a0 I find it gives the image a very surreal quality because the two very different sorts of imagery are connected and flow from one to the other.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a sort of dissolving reality; a face slowly morphing into a landscape or a landscape gradually melting into a geometric shape.\u00a0 It reminds me of one of those many Salvador Dali abstracted sequences.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1769\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3447\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1769\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1769\" title=\"under desert by Jesse\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/under-desert-by-Jesse.jpeg?resize=545%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Under Desert by Jesse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is the image referred to by Johan previously.\u00a0 As he said, it&#8217;s a variation using a negative scale parameter setting.\u00a0 The results, as you can see, are these elegant, almost vector graphic images.\u00a0 The title is a very good one; a desert cave or tunnel with some glowing light source.\u00a0 Again, such a different style from the gritty, weathered stone surfaces that most mandelbox images have.\u00a0 It sure pays to explore the whole range of parameter settings.\u00a0 When you set off to boldly explore the mandelbox formula, this is the sort of treasure and new worlds you may find.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1770\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3471\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1770\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1770\" title=\"Statics by Jesse1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Statics-by-Jesse1.jpg?resize=545%2C372\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Statics by Jesse Dierks (Jesse)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This one is absolutely incredible, isn&#8217;t it? not just because of the innovative needle like structures but also because of the range of imagery and the incredible intertwining designs.\u00a0 Note also the interesting recursion of the design we see in detail in the top and left as it iterates into infinity in the bottom and right.\u00a0 The color is perfect; by Jotero<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Magnificent detail.\u00a0 This is a royal mandel-palace.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s virtually monochromatic and yet looks great.\u00a0 The single color tone probably heightens the visual impression that all those intricate details make.\u00a0 Very subtle lighting and shading makes for a very vivid 3D image just like a scanning electron microscope does.\u00a0 The best fractal images are discovered, not constructed, in my opinion.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll be seeing some more great work by &#8220;Jotero&#8221;.\u00a0 (Some connection with this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evolution-of-genius.de\/\">site<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jotero.com\/\">this one<\/a>, too.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got more.\u00a0 Lots more.\u00a0 My fractal fishing net is still full.\u00a0 There&#8217;s just so much good stuff out there since the Mandelbulb and all the rest of the 3D fractals crashed onto the scene.\u00a0 So I thought I&#8217;d make a start by emptying out my net here;
