{"id":1161,"date":"2010-05-07T14:59:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-07T18:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1161"},"modified":"2010-05-12T22:18:48","modified_gmt":"2010-05-13T02:18:48","slug":"3-d-fractals-a-voyage-to-the-mandel-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/orbittrap.ca\/?p=1161","title":{"rendered":"3-D Fractals: A Voyage to the Mandel-Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know what happened, but all of a sudden there&#8217;s a new crop of 3-D fractals sprouting up and they&#8217;re seriously amazing. \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen 3-D fractals before but these Mandelbulb and Mandel-box things have taken 3-D to a whole new level of sophistication. \u00a0The best phrase I can think of to describe them is <em>Majestic Panorama<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s like a glimpse of a new world and not merely a new rendering technique or formula. \u00a0There&#8217;s a depth and style to these types of 3-D images that I&#8217;ve only seen in photographs and oil paintings and never before in digital art. \u00a0I found them all in the Gallery section of Fractalforums.com, my latest <em>re-<\/em>discovery in fractal art.<\/p>\n<p>Is it only eye-candy? \u00a0or 3-D video game backgrounds? \u00a0Or is it the start of a new genre of fractal landscape and panorama that began with programs like Terragen, Bryce and Xenodream but has only now reached a level of sophistication and creativity that sets it apart from everything else ? \u00a0It&#8217;s this kind of powerful algorithmic creativity that first got me interested in fractal art and then led me to look elsewhere as most fractal artists headed off down the dead end road of endless layering. \u00a0 Yes, what a breath of fresh air these bold new 3-D things are <em>&#8211;however you may like to label them<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I should note:\u00a0 Many of these images are snapshots of work in progress and early examples of newly developing rendering techniques.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t necessarily intended by their authors to be finished artwork for display or exhibition.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve reviewed them here simply because I think they&#8217;re extremely interesting and worthy of greater attention and viewership.\u00a0 Also, I&#8217;m not up on the technical side of the Mandelbulb and Mandelbox stuff because it&#8217;s very new to me.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not even familiar with the software.\u00a0 Hey, I just like looking at computer made pictures.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s some cool ones&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1169\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1930\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1169\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1169\" title=\"mandelbrotbox-experiment-1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/mandelbrotbox-experiment-1.jpeg?resize=500%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">mandelbrotbox-experiment-1 by ker2x (click to view in majestic panorama mode!)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>&#8212; update: 05\/12\/2010: <a href=\"http:\/\/fractals.s3.amazonaws.com\/mandelbox\/mandelbrotbox-smallville.jpg\">click here<\/a> to view a much higher resolution version of ker2x&#8217;s mandelbrotbox-experiment-1<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like all of these images, you really have to view them fullsize which you can do by clicking on them.\u00a0 This one really shows the freaky, sci-fi and particularly three-dimensional <em>awe and wonder<\/em> aspect to these types of images.\u00a0 The landscape itself is intriguing but the hovering island (and copper\/emerald color palette) makes this image simply <em>monumental<\/em>.\u00a0 Also, the hazy, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aerial_perspective\">aerial perspective<\/a>&#8221; accomplished in the rendering makes this image look extremely polished and as carefully created as if it had been painted by hand in oil paints.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1173\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2169\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1173\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1173\" title=\"Retro Metal Cathedral 3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Retro-Metal-Cathedral-3.jpeg?resize=500%2C400\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Retro Metal Cathedral 3 by MarkJayBee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Click it to check out the larger version at Fractalforums.com.\u00a0 What makes the detail in images like this so spectacular I think is the depth and incredibly realistic lighting.\u00a0 Although ray-traced images can be intensely realistic and almost &#8220;perfect&#8221; looking, they don&#8217;t have that &#8220;aerial-perspective&#8221;, that vast expanding background and distance that this images demonstrates so well.\u00a0 This reminds me of something painted by the old masters like Raphael in his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Sanzio_01.jpg\">The School in Athens<\/a> fresco.\u00a0 Of course no 3-D fractal will have the expressive human figures and all those sorts of things that human painters depict, but they can like this one match the magnificent perspective and three dimensional design that Raphael&#8217;s setting and background has.\u00a0 Actually, I think MarkJayBee&#8217;s image here is better in that respect.\u00a0 Sorry, Mr. Raphael, but you just didn&#8217;t have the <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/mandelbulber\/\">Mandelbulber<\/a> program to help you back then.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1164\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1923\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1164\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1164\" title=\"before the rain\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/before-the-rain.jpeg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">before the rain, by Tglad<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t this have a certain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsycraftsy.com\/parrish\/mp_evening.html\">Maxfield Parrish<\/a> look to it?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what all the programming and rendering tools were that went into this one, but the results are unlike anything I&#8217;ve ever seen before made digitally.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t just mean the lighting and 3-D look, I mean the creativity in the image itself also.\u00a0 This has the variety and unpredicability of a real, natural landscape.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have the repetitive look that most fractal formulas have.\u00a0 There&#8217;s recursion here, but it&#8217;s not carbon-copy or of a purely repetitive nature like say, sierpinski objects have.\u00a0 You could wander around in this small sample of landscape for ages and not have explored every detail.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1171\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2012\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1171\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1171\" title=\"Thing\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Thing.jpeg?resize=500%2C390\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thing by knighty<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a good closeup of the exquisite and wondrous detail that these 3-D &#8220;things&#8221; have.\u00a0 Such things as this, although they look realistic enough, could never be made (gravity&#8217;s not a problem in the Mandel-Worlds like it is here) but if they could they would rival the sculpture and design of any human made temple or architectural wonder, at least from a design perspective.\u00a0 Knighty chose a good title as the image speaks for itself and who could ever give this a fitting name?\u00a0 I saw a lot of very intriguing architecture and 3-d works in the Star Wars second series of movies, but this kind of imagery exceeds that in quality and creativity.\u00a0 And these &#8220;things&#8221; can be animated, too.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1163\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1618\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1163\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1163\" title=\"Aztec Farms\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Aztec-Farms.jpg?resize=500%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Aztec-Farms.jpg?w=500 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Aztec-Farms.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aztec Farms by Timeroot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an even <a href=\"http:\/\/i765.photobucket.com\/albums\/xx298\/Timeroot\/SandyHoleyPlane00020.png\">bigger version<\/a> than the one you&#8217;ll find at the Fractalforums.com gallery.\u00a0 You can clearly see by the &#8220;Evaluation Copy&#8221; watermarks that this image is fresh from the laboratory.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve included it because, like all the others, it&#8217;s such a majestic panorama.\u00a0 I was really stunned when I first stumbled on this one.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got the level of detail that only electron microscope or satellite photos usally have.\u00a0 The title is quite appropriate too as it does resemble a vast area of farmland in the desert like a kibbutz in Israel.\u00a0 There&#8217;s so much variety and well rendered details in this one that I just had to include it even though it&#8217;s got all those watermarks on it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1170\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2185\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1170\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1170\" title=\"The Golden Hour 1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/The-Golden-Hour-1.jpg?resize=500%2C483\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Golden Hour 1 by MarkJayBee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You can&#8217;t get a better example of perspective than this image.\u00a0 This is like those Grand Canyon photographs that one sees in every travel magazine: you just want to dive into the picture and fly away.\u00a0 Artists used to spend a lot of time and get paid good money for making spectacular scenes like this.\u00a0 We&#8217;re really living in a golden age of art, or if you prefer, visual imagery.\u00a0 We&#8217;re seeing things every day that most explorers and world travelers could never imagine or hope to visit.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1166\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1675\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1166\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1166\" title=\"entrance to the hole\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/entrance-to-the-hole.jpg?resize=500%2C478\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"478\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">entrance to the hole, by Tglad<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reminds me a bit of Dave Makin&#8217;s video tour of the inside of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SnP4_OvKqxI&amp;feature=player_embedded\">golden sierpinski temple<\/a> which I included in a previous posting on animation.\u00a0 Again, look at the incredibly lifelike perspective shown in the mouth of the &#8220;hole&#8221;.\u00a0 These images are so vividly rendered and yet also so full of rich algorithmic details.\u00a0 The green, &#8220;tarnished bronze&#8221; coloring is a nice touch too and adds a subtle outline and resulting perspective to the image.\u00a0 I keep expecting to see someone walk up to the balcony railing and begin to issue a royal proclamation.\u00a0 This would make a nice model for rebuilding the <a href=\"http:\/\/starwars.wikia.com\/wiki\/Jedi_Temple\">Jedi Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1165\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1731\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1165\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1165\" title=\"Bulbox3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Bulbox3.jpeg?resize=500%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Bulbox3.jpeg?w=500 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Bulbox3.jpeg?resize=150%2C150 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bulbox3 by Jesse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This one really needs to be view full-sized to fully appreciate it.\u00a0 What I find most impressive about this one is that although everything looks like it&#8217;s been roughly chopped out of stone, there is a precision and carefully laid out design that it all fits into.\u00a0 Very intricate and yet having a primitive style to it at the same time.\u00a0 Also, although the image has a reflective or mirror-image quality to it, if you look closely you&#8217;ll see that very few of the opposing and apparently &#8220;mirrored&#8221; structures are actually identical.\u00a0 The plain background is a nice touch and shows off the rest of the image quite well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1172\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2184\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1172\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1172\" title=\"Plastic Mandeltoy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Plastic-Mandeltoy.jpg?resize=500%2C483\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plastic Mandeltoy by MarkJayBee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The smooth plastic texture in this one is unique.\u00a0 I find it gives the impression that the details have been exposed by chipping the plastic matrix away rather than being carved from it.\u00a0 I guess it&#8217;s probably a simple image in some ways since it&#8217;s just a cube, but as with all these Mandelbox things, there is never anything simple about them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1168\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1685\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1168\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1168\" title=\"Inside Tglad's Cube\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Inside-Tglads-Cube.jpeg?resize=500%2C281\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside Tglad&#39;s Cube by buddhi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I think the best comparison one can make to an image like this is a fossilized plant.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen plant fossils in museums and they have the same delicate detail and stone like qualities to them.\u00a0 I take it that &#8220;Tglad&#8217;s Cube&#8221; is a formula made by Tglad.\u00a0 Buddhi, the author of this image, also made the program that created it, <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/mandelbulber\/\">Mandelbulber<\/a> (just for Linux).\u00a0 I tried it out on my ancient computer (P4 2.26 Ghz &#8220;single&#8221;-core) and it works perfectly although I wasn&#8217;t able to make anything approaching the cool stuff these folks I&#8217;ve reviewed here have.\u00a0 You can see the sort of synergy that been developing over at Fractalforums.com with this 3-D fractal experimentation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1167\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=1967\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1167\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1167\" title=\"Exploring fractal planet\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/orbittrap.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Exploring-fractal-planet.jpeg?resize=500%2C293\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exploring fractal planet by bib<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You see here?\u00a0 Everything these 3-D fractal programs generate is awesome.\u00a0 Even this crevice in the side of\u00a0 this larger (I&#8217;m guessing) Mandelbox planet is cool to look at.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like the whole thing is one gigantic carefully carved piece of art.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ll bet every cave and crevice like this one is different in some way or another.\u00a0 Very nice coloring.\u00a0 The texture looks genuinely rock-like and the darker tones gives a nice shadowing and relief to the imagery.\u00a0 Nicely composed too.\u00a0 And the shadowed area to the right of the center suggests there&#8217;s more to be explored if we wander in &#8211;unless of course something <em>lives<\/em> in there.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00a0 For the first time in a long while there&#8217;s something I find that&#8217;s genuinely new and exciting in the fractal world.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got more to show you, but I thought I&#8217;d just focus on the <em>Majestic Panorama<\/em> genre for now.\u00a0 In the meantime I suggest you check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalforums.com\/index.php?action=gallery\">Gallery section<\/a> yourself over at Fractalforums.com.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty good collection all on it&#8217;s own created by the contributions of the many forum participants that have gathered over there.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not the usual sort of fractal gallery and I think you can see from what I&#8217;ve reviewed here that it&#8217;s got some really great works in it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know what happened, but all of a sudden there&#8217;s a new crop of 3-D fractals sprouting up and they&#8217;re seriously amazing.
